This course aims to help our 3rd-year students develop confidence and fluency in key communication contexts: socializing, presenting information, using the telephone, and participating in meetings. The focus of this course is the skill of presenting. This course will help our students prepare and perform various presentations, especially in terms of improving their listening and speaking skills in professional and business English. The main purpose is to make students familiar with various considerations of giving speeches, and to practice various discussions and presentations which are useful in their everyday life and future careers. Through meaningful language activities and interesting discussions of different topics, students will get practical and thorough training to use English properly and effectively in such situations as giving speeches, making comments, stating one’s opinion, debating over an issue, and dealing with hesitation strategies and “sticky” situations, etc. On the whole, this course helps students develop their English proficiency in general, and effective presentation skills in particular. It is hoped that this course may lay a firmer foundation for the students’ senior year. Finally, we believe students will find this course valuable and pleasant.

教學目標
This is a key course offered to the 2nd-year English majors for the whole academic year (two semesters). It is intended for our linguistic students to become more precise in their description and understanding of the English language. The purpose of this course is to help students to have a better understanding of language issues in general and the English language in particular. In this course, introductory surveys of general linguistics will be covered. Through lectures and discussions, this course seeks to provide students with fundamental language knowledge: -- a general perspective: what language is, how it is used, and how it is acquired, -- knowledge of basic linguistic terms and concepts, and -- the analysis of language in practical use. Major aspects of linguistics (language elements, speech and writing forms, features, phonetics, semantics, syntax, discourse analysis, pragmatics, language acquisition, language learning, language and culture, etc.) will be studied. This course is not only essential for our linguistic students, but also very valuable for those planning to take up a career in English Language Teaching (ELT). We hope our linguistic students will find this course interesting and enjoyable; and we also hope this course will have left students a more delightful interest in the English language after this course is over. (Please note that this course is delivered in English. ) (説明:本課程屬於應用語言學課程,不屬於文學或翻譯類課程。因此,不建議專修文學的同學選修。)
